Women's Volleyball Picks Up Conference Win at Averett

DANVILLE, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's volleyball team earned its first conference win of the season with a 3-1 road victory at Averett University on Friday evening.

The Hornets (5-5, 1-2 ODAC) dominated the first two sets, 25-17 and 25-14, before ending the match in the fourth set, 25-17, against the Cougars (1-7, 1-2 ODAC).

RECAP

A pair of Myah Watson kills, along with an ace by Kiyah Robinson, helped SU take a 4-0 lead in the first. The Cougars came back with a 5-0 run, for its only lead of the set, but the Hornets quickly regained control. An 8-1 run by Shenandoah assisted them in taking a late 11-point lead, 21-10. Ashlynn Spence ended the set with consecutive kills for a 25-17 decision.

Tied 7-7 in the second frame, the Hornets gained the lead thanks to an 8-1 run, which was aided by back-to-back aces from Susan Smith. A stretch of six straight kills as a team, along with another ace, had the Hornets up 22-10, before wrapping up the set at 25-14, thanks to another ace in the match by Robinson.

Averett returned the favor in the third set, winning 25-14, which was anchored by a 10-0 run in the middle of the set.

Shenandoah fell behind early in the fourth set but were able to climb ahead for the first time at 5-4. SU would go up by six on multiple occasions in the set, which would be the largest lead for the visitors until taking a 24-17 lead. Now up by seven, Amanda Schaffer ended the match with one last service ace for the Hornets.

Overall on the evening, Shenandoah had 10 aces, led by three from Schaffer. Spence led the team with 14 kills and two solo blocks. Liberos Samantha Shy and Anika Dodge led the Hornets in digs with 14 and 10, respectively.

The Hornets are in action tomorrow for a tri-match against ODAC opponent Guilford College and NAIA Carolina University. The action starts at 11 a.m.
