WINCHESTER, Va. — Kierney Weigle netted a pair of goals to spark a unanswered three-goal surge as the Shenandoah University field hockey team (7-1) rallied for a 3-1 victory over Catholic University (3-6) on Wednesday night at Aikens Stadium.
Catholic struck first in the opening quarter. At the 11:26 mark, Lauren Keast capitalized on a setup from Molly Romano to give the visitors an early 1-0 advantage.
Shenandoah responded in the second quarter off a set piece. Following an Ava Fields penalty corner at 16:44, Camryn DeLeva set up Weigle for the equalizer at 16:52 to knot the game 1-1 entering halftime.
The Hornets took their first lead early in the third quarter. Fields converted an insert off another penalty corner, scoring via an assist from Ellie Quinn at 32:58 to put Shenandoah ahead 2-1.
Shenandoah put the game out of reach early in the final quarter. After Lowman stopped an initial shot by Reagan Flory off a corner insert, Weigle cleaned up the rebound at 49:37 for her second goal of the evening, sealing the 3-1 win.
Overall, Shenandoah outshot Catholic 10-5 (8-2 on goal) and held a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners. Lowman finished with five saves for Catholic, while Alexander recorded one save in net to secure the win for Shenandoah.
