Winchester, Va. – The Shenandoah University Field Hockey team came back from down two goals in the first fifteen minutes of the game to take the win over Denison, 4-2.
The Hornets (2-0) used balanced attacking and defending throughout the game to outscore the Big Red (0-1) 4-0 in the final 44 minutes of the contest.
How it Happened
- First Quarter: Denison came out onto Aikens Stadium looking for revenge from last season's late-game defeat to these same Hornets, and would score in the 6th minute off the stick of their All-American Emma Gebhart. The Hornets would be held to just two shots, one on goal.
- Second Quarter: 41 seconds into the second quarter, the Big Red would find their second goal of the game off of a rebound save. It wasn't until a penalty corner goal by Kierney Weigle at the 20-minute mark that started the turnaround for the Hornets.
- Third Quarter: A bit over 7 minutes into the second half, the Hornets would draw level with another goal on a penalty corner in which Camryn DeLeva would find Weigle for her second goal of the game. Cassidy Alexander would add a pair of saves to her tally.
- Fourth Quarter: The Hornets' pressure continued, adding shots by Rylin McCloskey and Maddie Long before taking the lead on Weigle's third goal of the game. SU would put the nail in the coffin with a Kaitlyn Nakamura goal with just under 4 minutes to play.
