Austin Guptel joined Scott Yoder’s full-time staff in July, 2022 as defensive backs coach.
 
Guptel came to Shenandoah with experience at all three NCAA levels including a pair of stops at both Division I FCS and Division II. A 2016 Central Connecticut State grad, Guptel was the defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator at DII Clarion (Pa.) University in 2021. He also headed up the Golden Eagles recruiting efforts.
 
Prior to Clarion, Guptel was the defensive backs coach at DIII St. Vincent for the spring, 2021 campaign after spending one year at DI Central Connecticut State. The Bearcats went 2-2 in the pandemic-shortened season.
 
His first two coaching stops after serving as a student assistant at CCSU were one season each at DII University of Sioux Falls and DI University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. While at Sioux Falls, he helped coach a defense that finished second in the nation in total defense and eighth in takeaways.
 
In his one year at UTC, the Mocs led the Southern Conference in pass defense.
 
Guptel began his collegiate career at DIII Benedictine (Ill.) University before transferring to Central Connecticut State and serving as a student assistant until completing his undergraduate studies.
 
Following his graduation, he worked as a statistics analyst for ESPN for two years until transitioning into coaching at UTC in June, 2018.
 
With the Hornets, Guptel is involved in all aspects of the program including practice and game management, player development, recruiting, and academic monitoring.
