Byron Mitchell '14 was an assistant football coach from August, 2018 until May, 2021. This bio now exists as a historical reference.
Former SU standout Byron Mitchell '14 returned to his alma mater in 2018 to round out Scott Yoder's full-time staff.
Mitchell, a four-year starter for the Hornets that earned All-league honors three times in his career, joined Yoder's staff as the defensive backs coach.
The Virginia Beach, Virginia returned to Shenandoah after spending two years as an assistant football coach at Tallwood (Virginia) High School. During this time at the 6A school, Mitchell helped the Lions to a 13-9 record with the 2016 squad posting an 8-3 mark and appearing in the VHSL 6A playoffs.
Prior to his two seasons at Tallwood, during which he also served as a special education teacher, Mitchell was an assistant football coach at Albright (Pa.) College. He coached the defensive backs at the DIII school while recruiting in Maryland and Virginia.
A team captain in his senior year, Mitchell graduated as the program's all-time leader in tackles with 276. He is now third all-time with his 94 stops in 2013 the sixth best season performance all-time.
Mitchell grabbed first team accolades from the ODAC in 2013 and the USA South in 2011 (the program's final year in that league) as well as grabbing a second team All-ODAC selection in 2012. Additionally, he was named All-Region in 2013 and All-State in both 2011 and 2013.
Following a senior season that saw him named to a pair of all-state teams and third team All-South Region by D3football.com, Mitchell played in the D3Senior Classic All-Star game.Â
With the Hornets, he is involved in all aspects of the program including practice and game management, player development and academic monitoring. His recruiting territories include Hampton Roads in Virginia as well as Baltimore, Cecil, Harford and Anne Arundel counties in Maryland.
At part of his secondary responsibilities, Mitchell serves the department as the Co-Advisor for the student-athlete advisory committee.
