9/16/2000 2:59:00 PM

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Shenandoah University earned its first football victory since 1967 with a 40-6 win at Gallaudet University Saturday afternoon.

Shenandoah (1-2), which reinstated football this fall after a 32-year absence, jumped all over the Bison (0-2) in earning the blowout victory.

The Hornets scored the initial 27 points of the contest and rolled up 402 yards in total offense in the win.

Adam Simmons scored the game's first TD, scampering 64-yards at the 9:39 mark of the first quarter, to give coach Walter Barr's club a lead it would not relinquish.

A Matt Harrison safety 4:14 before halftime proved to be the game-winning points for SU.

Simmons' TD run, which completed a five-play, 92-yard drive, was not the Hornets longest run of the afternoon. Freshman Anthony McGhee went 71 yards for a score with 7:00 left in the third to put the visitors' up 33-6.

McGee's run came on the Hornets first play from scrimmage after Gallaudet had registered its only touchdown of the day.

McGhee led all players with 128 yards rushing on nine carries with Simmons adding 60 yards on six touches.

Shenandoah held the Bison to six first downs and just 181 total yards.

Harrison and Justin Payne both had five tackles.
