FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Shenandoah University football team closed out its second season of intercollegiate play with a 17-12 Dixie Conference victory at Methodist University Saturday afternoon.
Â
Playing for the final time for program founder Walter Barr, who announced his retirement last week, the Hornets (5-5, 3-3 Dixie) posted a classic Barr victory in taking out the Monarchs (5-5, 3-3).
Â
Shenandoah had 248 of its 277 yards in total offense on the ground, blocked a punt for a touchdown and saw six different men carry the football.
Â
Anthony McGhee led this group with 188 yards on 18 carries.
Â
The game-winning score was the blocked punt for TD – Wayne Washington both blocked the punt and after recovering at the 3, trotted in for the score.
Â
Officially, this is the first punt return for touchdown in program history.
Â
The score, happening 52 seconds into the second half, gave SU a 17-3 lead.
Â
George Hewan and Eddie Freeman both had 16 tackles for the victors.
Â
The win clinches the first .500 season for the program, which restarted last year after a 33-year absence. Barr ends his SU career leading the program to eight wins in 19 games. The victory is also the third straight for the program and comes in the first-ever meeting between the Hornets and Monarchs.
