NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Shenandoah University won the first overtime game in program history with a 27-24 Dixie Conference victory at Christopher Newport University Saturday afternoon.
Â
Playing in front of 3703 rain-soaked fans at Captains Stadium, the Hornets (2-3, 1-1 Dixie) combined a 28-yard Morgan Linkenauger field goal along with a Matt Harrison strip-sack to down CNU (0-3, 0-1).
Â
The first-year Captains forced overtime with a nine-play, 57-yard drive that concluded with a one-yard touchdown run just 57 seconds before the end of regulation.
Â
After running out the clock on its ensuing possession, Shenandoah got the ball first in the overtime session.
Â
SU had the ball for 11 plays before Linkenauger drilled the 28-yard field goal to put the pressure back on CNU.
Â
It took just one play for the defense to end it, as Harrison rushed in from his linebacker spot and sacked the Captains quarterback five yards into the backfield. Classmate Kalvin Oliver fell on the ball, ending the contest and giving Walter Barr's club the comeback victory.
Â
Shenandoah rallied from a 14-3 first quarter deficit with a pair of touchdowns in the third; the two teams traded touchdowns in the fourth to set up the OT.
Â
Sophomore Anthony McGhee led all players with 158 yards rushing on 12 carries with Wes Karns adding 74 on 10 carries and Dennis Robart 67 on 18 touches.
Â
Jesse Hardesty had 11 tackles and Gregg Anderson eight along with one interception for the SU defense.
