WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's soccer program extended its longest winning streak of the season to three games with a 2-0 shutout against USA South foe Methodist College Saturday afternoon.
Shenandoah (6-4-2 overall, 4-2 USA South) was led by brilliant goaltending from sophomore keeper Kyle Hodges (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) who earned his fourth shutout victory of the season, and third in a row, with nine saves against the Monarchs (7-6-1, 1-2).
Both teams played in a very aggressive manner which came back to haunt MC early on as an uncarded foul inside the Methodist box allowed Shenandoah junior Luis Collantes (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) to convert a penalty kick giving the hosts a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute.
The Hornets preserved their one goal cushion throughout the first half and well into the second, despite being outshot 10-6 in the latter period. Methodist threatened with a strike in the 81st minute, but were denied courtesy of a diving stop by Hodges.
Sophomore David Schmitt (Brandon, Fla./Bloomingdale) gave Shenandoah an insurance goal with a header off of a long cross from Collantes in the 88th minute to smother any chance of a last minute comeback by the visitors.
