SALISBURY, Md. – Shenandoah University staged two comebacks Saturday afternoon to get its biggest win in school history with a 23-22 non-conference victory over host Salisbury University.
The Shenandoah (7-2) win likely ends Salisbury's chances of a Pool B bid; with their strength of schedule the Gulls (7-1) probably needed to run the table to make a second straight appearance in the NCAA playoffs.
The Hornets got the victory with 2:16 to play when Wayne Hogwood (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) capped a nine play, 74 yard drive with a three-run run around right end for his second rushing touchdown of the day. The two-point conversion failed, but the Shenandoah defense held Salisbury without a first down on the next series and then ran out the clock.
The opening of the contest put Shenandoah in an unfamiliar hole: the Hornets gave up an early touchdown. For the first time all season long, an opponent scored in the opening quarter when Rishawd Watson put the hosts up 7-0 just 53 seconds when he took a swing pass from Dustin Johnson and scampered 76 yards down the near sideline for the TD.
Shenandoah answered right back with a scoring drive of its own; the Hornets drove 12 plays in 69 yards before the drive stalled at the Salisbury 10. Bryce Harrington (Merritt Island, Fla./Valdosta State) nailed a 32-yard field goal to make the score 7-3 Salisbury.
Shenandoah took its first lead of the game with 43 yard drive that sandwiched the end of the first quarter and ended with a Wayne Hogwood (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) scamper around right end on 3rd and goal from the 5.
The Hornets actually recovered the ensuing kick when the Harrington boot backed up in the strong wind at the Salisbury 35, but the Gulls stiffened and held for a three and out.
After Shenandoah held Salisbury to its own three and out, the Hornets drove 69 yards in 13 plays to make 17-7 with 4:47 remaining in the first half.
Salisbury closed out the first half scoring by taking advantage of a short punt, a pass interference penalty and the strong wind to hit a 32-yard field goal by Brock Boland with 26 seconds left.
The third period came and went without a score, despite nearly 100 yards in total offense and four first downs for the Hornets. After Shenandoah was held on a 4th down try at the Salisbury 30, the Gulls offense came alive to start the fourth.
Rob Pashkevich ripped off a pair of runs to give Salisbury a 1st and 10 on the Shenandoah 13, where the drive stalled. Boland slipped a 32-yard field goal just inside the right upright to put the hosts down 17-13.
Two plays later, they led 19-17.
Shenandoah failed to cover the ensuing kick, giving the Sea Gulls the football on the Shenandoah 22 yard line. One play after that, Johnson found a wide open Kyle Acker in the end zone to give his club their first lead since early in the second quarter.
Salisbury extended its advantage to five with another Boland field goal, but Shenandoah answered with that game-winning drive to extend its winning streak to four.
Anthony Frates (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) led Shenandoah with 103 of his team's 308 yards rushing while Hogwood added 72 along with the two touchdowns.
Pashkevich had a team high 68 yards for Salisbury and Dustin Johnson was 7 for 13 for 135 yards and two touchdowns through the air.
Shenandoah completes its season next week at Methodist College while Salisbury takes on Frostburg State in the Regents Cup.
