Bridgewater Runs Past Football

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Shenandoah University played No. 10 Bridgewater even for 15 minutes Saturday afternoon, but BC scored three second quarter touchdowns on its way to a 42-0 non-conference victory before 1717 fans at Jopson Field.

Shenandoah (1-1) had the first scoring opportunity; Bridgewater (2-0) gave SU the ball on the Hornet 43 yardline following a botched snap of a punt and the visitors drove all the way to the BC 16 before the drive stalled. Unfortunately, Morgan Linkenauger (Lanexa, Va./Lafayette) was wide left on his 33-yard field goal attempt and Bridgewater took over on the 20.

Three plays later, the Eagles made Shenandoah pay. Fullback Robert Matthews rumbled 66 yards on 1st down to give BC a 7-0 lead while breaking two tackles in the process.

Bridgewater scored on two of its next three possessions – only missing a 30-yard field goal during that span – to take a 21-0 lead into the halftime lockerroom. Despite getting 51 yards on 14 carries from Anthony McGhee (Reston, Va./South Lakes) possessing the ball for 15:43 to the Eagles 14:17, Shenandoah was once again done in by a quick strike Bridgewater offense.

BC rolled to 315 yards of total offense in the first half, 252 of which came in the second quarter. The Eagles three scoring drives went a combined 213 yards, but they used just 14 plays to take the commanding lead. Bridgewater also averaged 10 yards a play in the first 30 minutes of action.

The second half brought more of the same, albeit at a slower pace. BC scored a single touchdown in the third to go along with two more in the final stanza to win by the final margin. Bridgewater has now scored at least in all four meetings between the two schools since SU revived football for the 2000 season.

Junior quarterback Brandon Wakefield led the hosts with a 14 for 22 for 272 yard performance that included two touchdown passes while Winston Young added 84 yards rushing on just six carries. All of Young's damage was done in the fourth quarter as both teams subbed liberally.

McGhee had 82 yards rushing for Shenandoah and Anthony Frates (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) chipped in 55 yards on 14 carries. Bridgewater outgained SU 626 to 164 for the game and owned a 282 to 27 yard advantage through the air.

Junior Jesse Hardesty (Broadway, Va./Broadway) had 14 tackles (six unassisted) for the Hornets defense while All-American Jermaine Taylor made 11 stops (four unassisted, one for loss) to lead the BC defense.

Shenandoah hosts ODAC opponent Catholic University next Saturday at 7:00. This Shentel Stadium meeting will be the first ever between the two schools.
