WESTMINISTER, Md. - Shenandoah University gave it a solid effort, but Villa Julie proved too tough Friday evening as the Mustangs took a 3-1 decision over the Hornets in the opening round of the McDaniel College Tournament.
VJC (11-11) now advances to the semi-final round against Salisbury University. Shenandoah (13-10) will take on the College of Notre Dame in the first round of the consolation bracket.
The Mustangs advanced to face the Gulls on the strength of a 30-23, 30-28, 24-30, 30-23 win. SU hit just .074 for the match.
Freshman Michelle Chandler (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West) led the Hornets with seven kills and 14 assists while Jen Thompson (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) added six kills and 10 assists.
Another pair of freshman: Jenna Warrenfeltz (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg) and Christina Greene (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) led the defense with 23 and 18 digs, respectively.

Shenandoah's match against CND is scheduled for a 10:00 start Saturday morning.
