Salisbury Runs Past Football

WINCHESTER, Va. - No. 5/13 Salisbury University piled up 455 yards in total offense Saturday afternoon to defeat homestanding Shenandoah 42-7 before 1978 at Shentel Stadium.

The Sea Gulls (9-0) broke open a 7-7 game with 14 second quarter points, scored again to start the second half and added 14 more in the fourth to avenge a one point win by Shenandoah (6-3) at Salisbury last season.

Salisbury took the early lead when fullback Leroy Satchell, who finished the game with a game high 141 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries, blasted over from the 3 just over two minutes into the game. The Gulls had to drive just 32 yards to score; the Hornets fumbled three plays into the game for the second straight game.

Shenandoah tied the game on an 11-yard run by Brandon Lacey (King George, Va./Washington - Lee) at the 4:18 mark the first.

The Hornets appeared to be going in for the go-ahead touchdown after Lacey set up a 1st and goal from the Sea Gulls 7 late in the first, but Anthony Frates (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) fumbled on the next play after gaining two yards. This would be as close as the hosts would get to the end zone the rest of the game.

Satchell scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown with 6:43 to play in the second by capping a 4 play, 37 yard drive with a 1-yard run.

After Adam Dickerson closed out the first half scoring with 1:19 left, Teddy Savage, Satchell and Travis Peters found the endzone in the second half.

Satchell led all rushers with the 141 yards on 26 carries while quarterback Dustin Johnson added 79 yards on 10 carries. He was also 5 for 15 with 65 yards and a touchdown through the air.

Lacey had 105 yards rushing for SU on 14 carries; this is the third straight week he went over the 100 yard mark. This is the first time that a Shenandoah back has rushed for at least 100 yards and the Hornets have not won; Shenandoah has had a 100-yard back on 18 different occasions. This is also the first time in program history that the Hornets have lost in month of November.

Shenandoah will play next week for the USA South championship against Methodist College. An SU win qualifies the Hornets for an NCAA playoff berth.
