WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University outgained No. 23 Bridgewater, held the ball over twice the time that the Eagles did and ran a school record 94 plays still came out on the short end of a 35-13 score before a Shentel Stadium record 7436 fans Saturday night.
Bridgewater (1-1) used big plays in the special teams to take the fifth straight win in the series between the two schools. BC opened the game with a 100 yard kickoff return for a touchdown, blocked a punt for a touchdown five minutes later and then had a 39-yard punt return to set up a third score midway through the second quarter.
Marcus Washington got it all started as he took the opening kick, beat two defenders about the 20-yard line and then outraced the rest of the Hornets (1-1) to the endzone.
The two teams then traded one possession each before Bridgewater forced a Shenandoah punt from the SU 35 with just under 10 minutes to play in the first period. Winston Young gave his team what proved to be the winning points on the play when he sprinted in off the left side, blocked the punt, recovered the ball and trotted in the final 15 yards for a touchdown.
The Eagles added two more scores before halftime, as they took advantage a short field to set up a Eric Spence 15 yard scoring run before Jacobie Napier closed out the scoring by hauling in a 76-yard touchdown pass with 2:51 to play in the second.
Shenandoah, which had outgained and outpossessed BC in the first half, finally got something to show for its efforts by taking the second half kickoff and driving 80 yards in 19 plays to get on the board with 5:38 to play in the third. Junior Anthony Frates (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) capped the drive by blasting over from the 5-yard line. The score also snapped a 15-quarter draught for the Hornets offense against BC; SU hadn't scored an offensive touchdown since the third period of the 2000 contest.
Sophomore Brandon Lacey (King George, Va./Washington-Lee) made things interesting for the home fans by making it 28-13 on a 33-yard run with 6:46 remaining, but Bridgewater answered with a 4 play, 47 yard drive that sealed the Hornets fate.
Shenandoah outgained Bridgewater 326 to 187, including 197 to 109 on the ground. SU quarterback Jon Hoffman (Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field) set a school record with 14 completions in 35 attempts, but the 129 yards passing was not enough to overcome the Eagles 231 yards in kickoff and punt returns.
Shenandoah travels to Randolph Macon next week for a 1:00 kickoff.
