ASHLAND, Va. - Shenandoah University staged the biggest comeback in its four plus intercollegiate football seasons with a 24-20 non-conference win at Randolph Macon Saturday afternoon.
SU (2-1) turned the ball over six times, including three interceptions, before scoring 21 points in the final 19 minutes of the game to salvage the victory over Macon (1-2). The Hornets three first quarter turnovers led to 20 points by the Yellow Jackets and allow the hosts to enter the halftime lockerroom with a 20-3 lead.
Shenandoah won the contest when sophomore Maurice Coleman (Woodbridge, Va./CD Hylton) caught a seven yard touchdown pass from Jon Hoffman (Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field) with 3:12 to play.
The touchdown pass and catch capped an eight play, 52 yard drive that completed the SU comeback.
Down by the same 20-3 score with just over four minutes to play in the third, the Hornets began their comeback when Brandon Lacey (King George, Va./Washington-Lee) outraced a trio of Macon defenders to the far pylon on third and goal from the RMC 3.
After Randolph Macon snuffed out an SU rally with Joe Jenkins interception on the Jackets 11 and then pinned the Hornets to their own 11 yard line midway through the fourth, it appeared that Shenandoah's luck had run out.
Until Hoffman got hot.
Hoffman drove his club 93 yards in four plays and just 1:49, putting the Hornets down 20-17 with 7:28 remaining. Lacey turned in his third big play in as many weeks when he hauled in a Hoffman swing pass and scampered the final 49 yards for the score.
The defense held RMC to another three and out, setting up the drive the culminated in the Coleman touchdown.
Randolph Macon seized control of the game by forcing three turnovers in the first 15 minutes of play. The Jackets scored 20 unanswered points off of the two fumbles and one interception, all in 3:58.
SU punt returner Kenny Weaver (Ruckersville,Va./William Monroe) provided the hosts' first break when coughed up a punt to give RMC the ball on the SU 15 with just over five minutes remaining. Two plays later, Khalil Shareef waltzed in from the seven.
Three plays after Shareef scored, Joe Jenkins recovered a Chris Delfin (Burke, Va./Robinson) fumble and 33 raced yards for the score.
A Hoffman interception came next, giving Macon the ball on its own 43. Shareef made it 20-3 in favor of the hosts when he took the 1st down handoff and scampered virtually untouched for a 57-yard TD run.
Shenandoah briefly got its offense going midway through the second, but a Delfin fumble just inside the RMC 35 snuffed out the Hornets best scoring chance of the quarter.
SU outgained RMC 392-201, including 210 to 120 through the air. This is the first time in Shenandoah history that the Hornets gained more yards through the air then they did on the ground. Hoffman set a school record with a 210 passing yards, and he tied Wayne Hogwood '04 with the two TD passes.
Shareef had a game high 68 yards rushing for RMC while Steven Ahonen caught seven passes for 76 yards. Jake Warren was 16 for 34 for the 120 yards in his first start.
Both teams head into league play next week – SU travels to Ferrum while Randolph Macon takes on Catholic.
