FERRUM, Va. - Another game, another fantastic finish.
Shenandoah University staged its second furious comeback in as many weeks Saturday afternoon at USA South rival Ferrum, winning 27-24 in overtime before 2158 fans at Adams Field.
Shenandoah (3-1 overall, 2-0 USA South) tied the game with a school record 43-yard field goal by Bryce Harrington (Merritt Island, Fla./Road Island) as time expired and then scored the only points in the overtime to defeat host Ferrum (2-2, 0-1).
SU had the initial possession of the extra frame, and Harrington nailed a 39-yarder to give the Hornets a 27-24 lead. Ferrum then advanced the ball 10 yards on its possession before calling a halfback option pass on 1st and 10 from the Shenandoah 15. Sophomore cornerback Justin Mosser (Centreville, Va./Westfield) intercepted the pass, giving the Hornets the improbable victory.
After roaring back in the third quarter to take a 14-10 lead behind a pair of rushing touchdowns, Shenandoah found itself back in a 10-point hole after the Panthers scored at the 12:40 and 8:31 marks of the fourth.
For the second straight week, the passing offense took over as Jon Hoffman (Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field) marched SU 69 yards in seven plays to bring the score to 24-21. Senior receiver Mike McVearry (Bowie, Md./South River) finished the drive with an 11-yard TD catch. He finished the game with a game high seven catches for 115 yards; this is the first time that an SU receiver has cracked the 100-yard barrier in a game.
Holding the three-point lead, Ferrum drove 23 yards in five plays before punting to the Hornets with 1:54.
Hoffman then guided Shenandoah to the Panthers 26, where Harrington drilled the game tying 43-yarder as time expired. Ferrum nearly ended the game two plays earlier as Hoffman was sacked and fumbled the ball with just under a minute remaining, but Anthony Frates (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) recovered for the visitors to keep the Hornets chances alive. The play went for an 18-yard loss, and Shenandoah ran a running play to the middle of the field to set up Harrington's kick.
The furious comeback was necessitated after Ferrum took advantage of a pair of SU special teams miscues to score 10 first half points. A roughing the punter penalty extended the Panthers first drive, leading to a Dustin Hamoy touchdown at the 13:37 mark of the second.
The next play was déjà vu all over again for Shenandoah; sophomore Brandon Lacey (King George, Va./Washington-Lee) fumbled the ensuing kickoff to give Ferrum the ball on SU 40. Six plays later, freshman Matt Novak nailed a 40-yard field goal to give the Panthers a 10-point lead.
Terrell Mulford led Ferrum with 126 yards rushing on 17 attempts while Hamoy had 88 on 14. FC finished with 386 yards in total offense, 302 on the ground.
Hoffman broke his own passing record for the second straight week – he finished 13 for 29 for 218 yards and one touchdown through the air.
Shenandoah faces Christopher Newport next week. Shentel Stadium kickoff is set for 7:00.
