WINCHESTER, Va. - Greensboro College made it five for six in the all-time football series with Shenandoah University by taking a 34-27 USA South Conference victory Saturday night at Shentel Stadium.
GC (1-5, 1-2 USA South) erased a 20-12 halftime deficit by scoring 15 third quarter points against the host Hornets (1-5, 0-3).
The winning score and final touchdown came with 7:35 to play in the contest when running back Torrey Lowe lined up behind center and scampered in from the SU 6 on 2nd down and 1. The Pride had taken over at the 14-yardline after Shenandoah punt returnerÂ
Paul Diggs muffed a punt and Jason Choate recovered for the visitors.
The muffed punt was one of two Hornets miscues that turned into touchdowns for Greensboro. The Pride got their initial go-ahead score midway through the third period when Taylor Gladden picked offÂ
Jon Hoffman at the SU 25, leading to a four-play drive that culminated in a Justin Roberson to Anthony Williams 15-yard TD pass.
Roberson eluded the rush, rolled right and threw a pass that Williams' caught as he dove out of bounds just inside the right pylon.
Shenandoah, which outgained Greensboro 475 to 363, took the early lead by driving 80 yards in nine plays on the initial drive of the game.Â
Anthony Frates , who had a game high 145 yards rushing on 33 carries, completed this drive with a 1-yard plunge 1st and goal.
Following the Lowe TD to put GC up 34-27, SU threw interceptions on consecutive possessions before turning it over on downs on its final possession of the game. The Hornets advanced the ball all the way to the Pride 38 before recording two incompletions and a sack before the fourth down pass also went incomplete.
Roberson was 23 for 36 for 248 yards and four touchdowns for the visitors while Lowe had 13 carries for 66 yards, caught six passes for 70 yards and also was 2 for 2 for 20 yards through the air.
SophomoreÂ
Proteus Herring set a new school record for the hosts with six catches for 161 yards and two touchdowns. He scored on receptions of 35 and 49 yards in the first half.
Shenandoah travels to NC Wesleyan next week in another USA South Conference contest.
