Methodist Tops Football

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Methodist College extended one streak while stopping another Saturday afternoon in the Monarchs 35-0 USA South Conference victory over visiting Shenandoah.

The win is the first ever for the Monarchs (8-2, 6-1 USA South) over Shenandoah (1-9, 0-7). MC had lost all four previous lifetime meetings to the Hornets.

This victory, coupled with Christopher Newport's 44-7 win at Ferrum Saturday, also means that Methodist wins a share of the USA South Conference title. Ferrum earns the automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs by virtue of its 42-37 at Ferrum on October 14, but it keeps the league's streak of never having an outright champion alive.

In five seasons of USA South Conference football, Ferrum and Christopher Newport shared the 2001 and 2002 titles, CNU and Shenandoah the 2003 and 2004 crowns and now Ferrum and Methodist in 2005.

The Monarchs got all of the points they would need at the 12:05 mark of the first when quarterback Chris Roncketti kept it on an option left from 3-yards out to give his club the early lead. Roncketti's second and goal run capped a seven-play, 59-yard drive.

After holding Shenandoah on its initial possession of the contest, Roncketti gave his club some breathing room by connecting on a 93-yard TD strike to Chuck Howard on Methodist's first snap of its second possession. This hookup also set a new school record for longest pass in history.

MC closed out the first half scoring on another Roncketti TD pass, this one 20 yards to George Sands.

The shutout against SU is the first since the fifth game of the 2003 season, a streak of 25 games.

Methodist finished the game with 453 yards in total offense, including 279 through the air.

Senior Anthony Frates led the Hornets with 76 yards on 23 carries.
