WINCHESTER, Va. - Maryville College rebounded from an early Shenandoah University touchdown to down host SU 36-13 in USA South Conference action Saturday afternoon at Shentel Stadium.
Shenandoah (1-8, 0-6 USA South) took an early 6-0 lead when juniorÂ
Brandon Lacey raced 60 yards for the opening score of the game at the 8:10 mark of the first. Lacey started the Hornets season long run from scrimmage over right tackle, but cut back as he reached the linebackers and dashed to paydirt down the left side of the field.
Unfortunately for the Shentel Stadium crowd, Shenandoah's lead would be short-lived.
Maryville (2-7, 2-5) answered back just under five minutes later when quarterback Justin Price completed a four play, 60 yard drive with a 6-yard toss to Matt Pace. The extra point was good, and the Fighting Scots had a lead they would not relinquish.
MC made it 13-6 one possession later when Price scrambled away from pressure on 2nd and 20 and found Justin Jackson all alone for a 44-yard TD strike. Jackson waltzed the final 20 yards to the end zone untouched as SU had a coverage breakdown.
Maryville added a Matt Dunn 37-yard field goal and another Price touchdown pass, this one 43-yards to Harrison Johnson, before the hosts were able to answer.
Lacey finished this drive off as well, trotting in from the Scots 8 to make it 23-13 with 5:01 left in the third.
After Shenandoah held forced an MC punt on the ensuing possession, the Scots used a defensive touchdown to snuff out any chances of a home team rally. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Colby Townsend sacked SU quarterbackÂ
Blake Derby and forced a fumble in the process.
Andrew Hodge picked up the loose ball at the Hornets 21 and rumbled the rest of the way for the game-controlling touchdown.
Price finished the day 7 for 18 for 151 yards and three touchdowns against one interception while Derby was 9 for 22 for 101 yards and one pick. This interception, on the final play of the game, resulted in an 80-yard return for touchdown by Travis Addison.
Lacey led all rushers with 87 yards on 10 carries.
Shenandoah completes its 2005 season next Saturday afternoon at Methodist College.
