WINCHESTER, Va. - Bridgewater College jumped out to a two touchdown lead after 15 minutes and then scored three unanswered touchdowns in the second half to take a 49-20 non-league football victory over host Shenandoah Saturday night.
Bridgewater (1-1) scored touchdowns on its first four possessions against Shenandoah (1-1), but found itself in a ballgame when the Hornets cut the deficit to 28-20 by halftime.
SU juniorÂ
Brandon Lacey countered the heroics of Eagles senior Marcus Washington (3 rushing TD, 2 passing) by helping his club back into the game by scoring one touchdown and helping to set up another.
After Washington scored touchdowns on runs of 2 and 3 yards in the first five minutes of the game, Lacey capped a 5-play, 68 yard drive for the hosts with a 31-yard TD run.
BC answered with another score beforeÂ
Anthony Frates hit paydirt on two consecutive possessions with runs of 3 and 1 yards. His second TD, on 4th and goal from the 1, came with just 16 seconds remaining in the half. Shenandoah got this opportunity when Lacey took a 3rd and 10 pitch and raced 42 yards to the Bridgewater 3.
The outcome of the game could very well have been decided on the first two plays of the second half.
The Hornets received the second half kick, and seniorÂ
Chris Jenkins coughed it up on the 50-yardline after returning the David Blackwell kick 37 yards.
Washington then took the first down handoff around right end for a 50-yard TD run, giving the Eagles a 35-20 advantage.
Lacey led all rushers with 110 yards on 12 carries and also added another 69 yards receiving. Washington had 97 yards rushing and three TDs on 15 carries and was 2 for 2 through the air for a pair of touchdown passes.
Shenandoah hosts Randolph-Macon next Saturday night at Shentel Stadium in another 7:00 start.
