WINCHESTER, Va. - In a game where all of the points were scored on special teams, visiting Methodist College made one more play than host Shenandoah to down the Hornets 9-7 in the USA South Conference and season football finale for both schools Saturday afternoon at Shentel Stadium.

Methodist (4-6, 2-5 USA South) avoided the league's basement as they answered a Shenandoah blocked punt for a touchdown with three Patrick Larkin field goals.

The last one, a 27-yarder from the left hash with 7:50 to play, gave the Monarchs their first lead of the contest.

Shenandoah (2-8, 1-6) had a chance to kick the game-winner with 12 seconds remaining, but sophomore Eric Lefebvre just missed to the left on a 30-yard attempt.

The Hornets drove 74 yards in 11 plays, all through the air, to put themselves in position for the game-winner. Freshman Twaun Rhodes, inserted a quarterback for the final drive, completed three of six passes for 81 yards on the drive and also gained 15 yards via a roughing the passer penalty midway through the series. Two of his completions went for at least 29 yards and his second, a 28-yarder to classmate EJ Brown, came on fourth down and 23 from the SU 36.

Rhodes completed his next pass to senior Brandon Lacey, who took the ball to the MU 12. Rhodes was tackled for no gain on the ensuing first down play before spiking the ball on second down.

Without any timeouts remaining, Shenandoah elected to attempt the kick on third down and Lefebvre missed just left.

The Hornets had taken the early lead at the 12:15 mark of the second when senior Mike Guerra blocked a punt from the 2-yard line right off of Methodist punter Jordan Allen's toe. The ball took one bounce in the end zone, where Anthony Hayes scooped it up for what proved to be the only touchdown of the game.

Larkin, a two-time All-USA South Conference pick at kicker, hit a 26-yarder at the 7:27 mark of the second and a 39-yarder with 3:09 to play in the third to keep MU in it. Both his second and third field goals came after Methodist took over in Shenandoah territory following an interception.

The two teams combined for 18 first downs and 350 yards in total offense (185 for Methodist, 165 for SU). The Hornets had 100 of their offensive yards through the air while the Monarchs had 205 yards rushing. Mike Hill led this attack with 121 yards on 27 carries.
