WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Washington & Jefferson used a dominating performance from the face-off 'x' Wednesday night propel the Presidents to a 13-5 non-league men's lacrosse victory over host Shenandoah.
W&J; (1-1) won 16 of 20 face-offs over the Hornets (0-2) to control the possession throughout the contest. The Presidents also scooped up 44 groundballs to their hosts' 18.
Sophomore Russ Kalkstein did most of the damage from the 'x' - he won 13 of his 14 attempts, had 10 groundballs and scored one goal on a fast break directly off of a draw.
Leading 3-1 after one, Washington & Jefferson pulled away from Shenandoah with three goals in 16 seconds midway through the second. Kalkstein finished this run with that fastbreak goal at the 9:04 mark - the Presidents also used this run to lead 6-2 by halftime.
SU attempted to make a game of it by scoring the first two goals of the third quarter, but W&J; scored the final three goals of the period (two on extra man opportunities) and the Hornets did not get closer than four goals the rest of the way.
W&J; was 4-of-6 with the extra man while Shenandoah converted on two of its seven chances.
