WINCHESTER, Va. - Christopher Newport University combined a fourth-quarter goalline stand with a late touchdown drive to down host Shenandoah University 17-3 in USA South Conference football action Saturday night at Shentel Stadium.
The win is the first-ever for CNU (3-1, 1-0 USA South) at Shentel Stadium. The Captains had lost two previous lifetime meetings at the five-year-old facility.
Shenandoah (1-4, 0-2) had its best offensive output of the season with 112 yards rushing and another 46 through the air. JuniorÂ
Paul Diggs led this attack with a season-high 92 yards on 23 carries.

CJ Madison forced a fumble by Rod Rodriguez at the CNU 32 on a Captains punt return.
The Hornets then preceded to drive all the way to the Christopher Newport 6, where the Captains stoppedÂ
Brandon Lacey on a 4th and 1 rushing attempt.
Shenandoah's field goal drive came on its next possession as they blocked a Christopher Newport punt on a 4th and 1 from the Captains 30.Â
Wes Pope blocked the ball for the hosts, who then advanced 18 yards in four plays beforeÂ
Travis Bishop nailed a 28-yarder with 5:37 remaining.
CNU recovered the Hornets on-side kick at the SU 44, and took just two plays to stick in the final touchdown of the contest and seal its first win at Shentel.
Roland Hillard, who had that last TD on a 28-yard run, led all rushers with 133 yards on 23 carries. He also scored the first touchdown of the game, a 1-yard plunge midway through the second quarter.
The Hornets are off next week and return to action on October 14 at Greensboro. Game time is 7:00.
