Women Lose VJC Consolation

STEVENSON, Md. - Host Villa Julie College erased a four-point halftime deficit on its way to a 56-49 women's basketball victory over Shenandoah in the consolation game of the Legg Mason Classic Sunday afternoon.

Shenandoah (7-3) took a 26-22 lead into the halftime lockerroom over the Mustangs (6-4), but fell victim to a second straight cold shooting performance from the field.

For the second time in as many outings, the Hornets shot just 9 for 32 (28.1 percent) from the field after the break. The shooting woes allowed VJC to quickly make up the four-point gap and earn its first victory in nine lifetime meetings with SU in the process.

Still, Shenandoah had its chances in the waning moments. Trailing 50-49 after senior Alicia Sanders canned a pair of free throws with 56 seconds remaining, SU forced a Villa Julie turnover only turn it back over with 47 seconds left.

The Hornets were then forced to foul, and VJC made six of its eight attempts from the line to seal the victory.

Senior Cassie Womack had 17 points and 16 boards with Sanders adding nine points and freshman Katherine Flint eight.
