Football Tops Pride

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University used a stellar offensive performance combined with outstanding special teams play to earn its first victory of the season in a 33-7 USA South Conference football win over Greensboro College Saturday night.

The win snaps both a 10-game losing streak and a 10-game home drought for the Hornets (1-5, 1-2 USA South). SU had not won since beating Greensboro (1-5, 1-2) 36-10 in Greensboro on October 14, 2006.

The home losing streak stretched back to the 2005 season - Shenandoah last had won at Shentel in a 20-10 victory over Randolph-Macon in week three of the 2005 campaign.

After scoring just 40 points all season long and being held without an offensive touchdown in three of the first five games of the season, SU exploded for 21 points in the first 15 minutes of Saturday's contest.

Sophomore Anthony Cordero got things started by capping an five-play, 80-yard drive with a 1-yard TD run at the 10:05 mark of the first.

Greensboro, which missed a 24-yard field goal on the opening possession of the contest, saw its kicking woes go from bad to worse on its next three series.

The Pride gave the Hornets a short field when punter Chris Palme had to field a high snap and was forced to try and run for the first down. Although Shenandoah missed a field goal on this possession, the punting situation proved to be an omen of things to come.

Palme was blocked on his next two attempts, with the hosts cashing in for touchdowns after each block.

Freshman Aaron Darnell returned the first block 25-yards for a score at 4:43, and after Robert Hembrick blocked the second punt, Paul Diggs blasted over from the 1 to give SU a 21-0 lead with 80 seconds remaining in the opening stanza.

The two blocks also represented the beginning of a 10-possession string in which Greensboro fumbled the ball away three times, threw one interception, turned it over on downs once and snapped a punt attempt over Palme's head for a safety.

Shenandoah added to its lead midway though the second when quarterback Vern Lunsford, in his first start of the season, finished off a six-play, 29-yard drive with a 7-yard option run on 1st and goal.

The hosts final score of the evening came on a 34-yard Wayne Hailey field goal with 13:34 to play.

The Pride closed out the scoresheet with 3:45 to play when quarterback Mike Caparaso tossed a 52-yard TD pass to Charlie Johnson.

The Hornets ran for 300 yards, with Diggs gaining 73 on 20 carries and Kevin Roberts 72 on 11. Eleven different men carried the ball at least once for SU, with all but three posting at least 12 yards rushing.

Greensboro had 260 yards in total offense, but rushed 26 times for negative 12 yards. Caparaso was 20 for 49 for 246 yards and one interception through the air.

Torrey Lowe, who was the focus of the Hornets defense coming in, touched the ball 24 times (11 rush, 8 receptions, 3 kick return, 1 pass and 1 punt return) for 138 all-purpose yards.
