WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Maryville College secured its second winning season in the past four years Saturday afternoon with a 21-10 USA South Conference football decision over Shenandoah.
The Scots (6-3, 3-3 USA South) opened the game's scoring at the 8:33 mark of the first and got the game winning score 66 seconds before halftime.
Shenandoah (2-7, 2-4) knotted the contest at 7-7 with 1:05 remaining in the first when seniorÂ
Paul Diggs blasted over from the 3. Diggs' TD, his fifth of the year, capped a six-play, 33-yard drive.
The Hornets had taken over on the MC 33 after SU freshmanÂ
Blake Campbell forced a fumble by Maryville quarterback Lucas Wall when he registered the first of his two sacks on the day.
The two teams traded the next two possessions before the Scots were able to put together a nine-play, 85-yard drive on their final series of the first half.
Running back Rommel Hightower, who finished the game with 139 yards rushing on 28 carries, completed the drive with a 2-yard TD run.
Hightower kept up the pressure early in the third, as took it in from the 8 to make it 21-7 with 10:14 to play in the quarter. Maryville had taken over in Shenandoah territory when Hornets quarterbackÂ
Vern Lunsford threw the first of his three interceptions on the day.
Shenandoah was able to cut the deficit to 11 on aÂ
Wayne Hailey field goal with 9:56 remaining, but could get no closer. In addition to the three interceptions, one of which was in the end zone, the Hornets also failed to convert on a 4th and goal from the Scots 2.
Maryville outgained SU 308-298, including a 241-150 yard advantage on the ground. Shenandoah, paced by freshmanÂ
Raphael Amey's 127 yards on six catches, had a season-high 148 yards through the air.
