WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Wilson College made a first half goal stand up Friday afternoon in a 1-0 non-league field hockey victory over host Shenandoah University.

Amy Newmaster scored in the 10th minute for the Phoenix (1-0) as they downed the Hornets for the second time in the past three years. Shenandoah (0-1) managed five shots to Wilson's three in the first half, but WC keeper Nikol Grafnetterova made two saves to preserve her team's lead.

The second half turned into a defensive battle, with Wilson taking the only two shots. SU freshman Chelsea Smith stopped both of them and finished the afternoon with three saves.

Shenandoah is off until traveling to Frostburg State on September 9.
