WASHINGTON, D.C. – Catholic University overcame four interceptions, a 0 for 5 performance in the red zone and three missed field goals Saturday afternoon to down visiting Shenandoah 7-6 in non-league football action at Cardinal Stadium.
Catholic (1-0) missed 43, 29 and 29-yard field goals in the first three quarters before failing on a pair of fourth down attempts inside the SU 20, but scored the only touchdown of the game with 4:33 to play on a 43-yard pass from Keith Ricca to Andrew Buis.
Ricca, who finished the game 21 for 40 for 196 and three interceptions, scrambled on the TD play to get some time before finding Buis in the back of the end zone.
Shenandoah (0-1), which had led 6-0 on a pair of
Wayne Hailey first half field goals, was unable to mount any offense after giving up the go-ahead score. Quarterback
Richard Glick threw two of his three picks following the Buis TD and was sacked twice.
Glick was 4 for 16 for 117 yards in his first collegiate start. All but seven of those yards came in the first half of play.
Hailey provided all of the visitors scoring by hitting a 39-yard field goal in the first quarter and a 31-yarder midway through the second.
Catholic outgained SU 286 to 240, including a 201 to 117 yard advantage through the air. Senior
Paul Diggs had a game-high 85 yards rushing on 26 attempts for the Hornets.
The Shenandoah defense, which played outstanding all afternoon, got double digit tackles from both senior
Wes Fry and sophomore
Ryan Cannon. Senior linebacker
Rip Roberts had two interceptions in his first collegiate start.
Shenandoah hosts Bridgewater next Saturday night at 7:00 in another non-league matchup.
