NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Host Christopher Newport used a two-touchdown first quarter Saturday afternoon to key a 35-0 USA South Conference football victory over Shenandoah.

The Captains (2-2, 1-0 USA South) scored on their opening possession of the contest before adding another with three seconds to play in the opening stanza.

Mike Thomas scored that initial touchdown for CNU as he capped a six-play, 62-yard drive with a 4-yard TD run.

After Shenandoah (0-5, 0-2) escaped further damage by forcing a Captains red-zone fumble on the host's next possession, Evan Taylor made it 14-0 CNU by taking an option pitch from quarterback Todd Faison and scampering 10 yards for the score.

The Captains, who rolled up 325 yards in total offense in the first 30 minutes, wasted another two chances to score in the first. SU was able to force a second red-zone fumble on the possession immediately after Taylor's TD, and the clock ran out on the Captains after they drove to the Hornets 3 on the last possession of the half.

The third quarter mirrored the first – CNU opened and closed the period's possessions with long touchdown drives. Thomas had both of the touchdowns – he made it 21-0 with a 1-yard plunge at 10:38 and 28-0 on a 4-yard run with eight seconds to play.

Shenandoah recovered its third fumble of the game on Christopher Newport's next possession, giving it possession on the CNU 38, but was unable to advance any deeper into Captains territory.

Christopher Newport finished off the game with two fourth quarter touchdowns against the Hornets reserves.

Defensively, sophomore Brodis Brown set a new school record for SU with 17 tackles. He had seven solo and 10 assisted to break the record of 16 set by four men, the last by Jesse Hardesty against Catholic in 2003.

CNU gained 567 yards in total offense to Shenandoah's 160 – the Hornets Richard Glick completed a season-high eight passes (seven in the first half) for 96 yards.
