WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Bridgewater College extended its winning streak to eight games over Shenandoah with a 20-6 victory over the host Hornets before 2478 Shentel Stadium fans Saturday night.

The Eagles (2-0) have not lost to Shenandoah (0-2) since the Hornets resumed playing football in 2000, but Saturday's game was the closest in the series.

In the seven previous meetings, BC had won by least 22 points on every occasion and had scored over 30 points in each contest.

That wasn't the case Saturday at Shentel.

The Eagles led just 7-0 at the break and needed a fourth down stop in the fourth quarter to prevent SU from getting within one possession of taking the lead.

Unfortunately for the home crowd, Bridgewater stopped the Hornets' Paul Diggs on 4th and 1 from the BC 18 with 8:31 to play, and the hosts did not threaten again.

Bridgewater took a lead it would not relinquish with 5:17 to play in the second quarter when Brandon Jones hauled in a 4th and 2 pass from Jeff Highfill and broke three tackles on his way to the end zone.

BC extended its advantage to 13-0 at the 9:04 mark of the third - Phillip Carter completed an eight-play, 57-yard drive with a 10-yard TD run.

Shenandoah answered right back on its ensuing possession - the Hornets drove 69 yards in 10 plays to make the score 13-6 in favor of the visitors. Diggs finished the drive with a 2-yard TD plunge on 1st and goal.

Shawn Baker completed the evening's scoring by gathering in a 5-yard TD pass from Highfill at the 12:36 mark of the fourth.

The Hornets drove from their own 32 to the Bridgewater 18 on the their next possession, but Diggs was stopped on the 4th and 1 play and BC was able to run all but 43 seconds off the clock after taking over possession.

Carter had 98 yards rushing on 19 attempts for the Eagles with Diggs gaining 79 for Shenandoah.

Bridgewater outgained SU 397 to 248, including 234 to 154 on the ground, and also possessed the ball 33:22 of the contest.

The Hornets did force three turnovers to the Eagles two.

Shenandoah hosts Albright next Saturday at 7:00 in a homecoming contest.
