GREENSBORO, N.C. - Shenandoah University overcame three first half turnovers, including two interceptions, to down Greensboro College 35-14 in USA South Conference football action Saturday night at Jamison Stadium.
Shenandoah (2-4, 1-2 USA South) jumped out to a quick two-touchdown lead, but found itself in a ballgame as Greensboro (2-4, 0-3) scored a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter.
The Pride tied the game at 14-14 when quarterback Mike Caparaso found receiver Torrey Lowe for a 22-yard pass with just 29 seconds left before halftime.
GC had taken possession of that scoring drive picking off SU quarterback Vern Lunsford's for the second time in the half. Six plays later, Caparaso hit Lowe on the out route to make it 14-14.
After having a field goal blocked at the end of the half, Shenandoah came out on fire following the break.
Corey Giffing got things started on the Pride's second possession of the half by blocking an Adam Brunner punt at the GC 15; Chris Rouse picked it up at the 8 and waltzed in for what proved to be the game-winning score.
The defense continued to keep the pressure up on the next possession as Joe Lunsford picked off Caparaso to set SU up with a 1st and goal from the Pride 4.
Kevin Roberts, who finished the game with 20 carries for 101 yards, took it in from the 4 to return the Hornets lead to two touchdowns.
Shenandoah then put the finishing touches on the scoring column by stuffing a GC fake punt and driving the final 32-yards in seven plays. Vern Lunsford capped that drive with a 1-yard plunge.
In addition to Roberts' 101 yards, BJ Smoot had 100 yards on just 10 carries. He also scored the Hornets second TD by taking a Lunsford bubble screen 63-yards at the 11:53 mark of the second.
Smoot accounted for nearly 250 yards in total offense – he had 100 yards rushing, 74 receiving and 74 in returns.
Despite being on the field for 76 plays, the defense held Greensboro to 238 yards passing on 50 attempts and just 25 yards rushing on 26 attempts. The SU defense also had four sacks.
