WINCHESTER, Va. - Christopher Newport University overcame three turnovers Saturday night to down host Shenandoah 17-7 in USA South Conference football action at Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium.

CNU (2-1, 1-0 USA South) won its fourth straight game in the series by holding the Hornets (1-4, 0-2) scoreless for the final 55:40 of the contest.

With the score tied at 7-7, the Captains scored what proved to be the game-winning points when running back Tunde Ogun finished off an 11-play, 66-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown at the 6:09 mark of the third.

The visitors then iced the contest with just over six minutes to play on a Jay Graham 47-yard field goal. Christopher Newport had taken possession of the ball three plays earlier when SU punt returner BJ Smoot was ruled to have touched the ball following a Captains punt.

CNU only gained one yard on the drive, but the excellent field position provided for the final points of the contest.

On the Hornets possession immediately prior to the muffed punt, SU drove the ball 70 yards in 10 plays to before fumbling on a 3rd and 1 play from the CNU 14. Unfortunately for the home fans, this would be as close as Shenandoah would come to the tying score.

Christopher Newport opened the scoring on its first drive of the game, going 69 yards in 10 plays to make it 7-0.

The lead would last 11 seconds.

SU junior Kevin Roberts, who has rushed for at least 100 yards in every game except one this season, busted up the middle on the first play of the Hornets ensuing possession for a school-record 81-yard TD run.

The 81-yard run breaks the record of 80 yards set by Anthony McGhee against Christopher Newport in 2001.

CNU, led by Ogun's 195 yards on 26 carries, outgained Shenanodah 357 to 250. Roberts had 160 yards rushing on 16 carries.
