Panthers Sweep Volleyball

WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Ferrum College snapped Shenandoah University's two-match volleyball winning streak with a 3-0 USA South Conference sweep over the Hornets Wednesday evening.

The 30-28, 25-16, 25-19 victory by the Panthers (12-15, 5-7 USA South) was closer than the score indicated as SU (12-12, 2-10) and FC were tied a total of 13 times in the three sets.

The Hornets had their best chance to win in the opening set as they led 24-22 with a chance to win on serve. Unfortunately for the home fans, Ferrum fought off three match points before getting two Rachel Shumaker kills to clinch the victory at 30.

FC brought itself to within one set of the victory by controlling the second set before the two teams were tied six times and traded the lead twice in the third.

Senior Jessi Johnson paced Shenandoah with nine kills and classmate Chevon Parker added eight.

Junior Amber DeHaven had a team-high 17 digs.

Jessica Flanagan had a double-double for the victors with 16 kills and 15 digs.

SU travels to Peace this Saturday for a tri-match with the host Pacers and N.C. Wesleyan.
