FERRUM, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's soccer team
recorded the biggest victory of its season Saturday morning with a
2-1 double overtime win over Ferrum College.
Sophomore Liberatus
Mwagombe scored off an assist from freshman John Peterman in
the 108th minute to give SU (3-8-2, 1-3 USA South) the victory over
Ferrum (2-9, 0-2).
The win also most likely means that the Hornets have now
qualified for the USA South Conference Tournament. Only six teams
make the post-season tourney in the seven-team league, and now SU
has the tiebreaker over the Panthers should the last spot come down
between the two schools.
Mwagombe's golden goal also snaps a three-game losing streak for
Shenandoah.
For the second time in as many outings, it appeared as if SU was
headed for the win in regulation only to see its opponent score an
equalizing goal in the waning moments of the contest.
Last week, Greensboro scored with 89 seconds remaining to tie
and then got the game-winner in regulation. This week, Billy Rhodes
tied it for the hosts with 24 seconds left.
However, the Hornets did not let Karim Kamara's opening
goal go for naught this time and earned their first OT win in five
tries this fall.
SU outshot FC 23-9 and held a 5-2 advantage in corners.
The Hornets host N.C. Wesleyan this Friday evening at 7 in
another USA South Conference contest.
