Women's Soccer Dominates Cougars

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University extended its women's soccer winning streak to five matches Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 USA South win over Averett.

After dominating possession early but coming up empty, Shenandoah (9-6-2, 4-1-1 USA South) wrapped three goals around the halftime break to ice the win over the Cougars (6-9, 3-5).

Sophomore Jessi Dennis scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 42nd minute when she received a cross from Amber Womack and ripped it past AU keeper Samantha Lupo.

Three minutes later, Womack served a corner into the box to classmate Katie Cataldo right on the doorstep - Cataldo flick-headed it past a defenseless Lupo.

If Averett had any thoughts of a comeback, Womack extinguished them 17 seconds into the second half by stealing the ball just outside the six-yard box and then beating Lupo to the far side.

Lightning struck for a second time as the Hornets closed out the day's scoring with a second tally off a corner kick.

This time it was Sara Hensley to Stormie Malik, with Malik one-timing it at the top of the six-yard box.

SU outshot the Cougars 24-3 and had all 11 of the game's corners.

Sophomore Brooke Strickler had to make just two saves, neither of them difficult, in recording her second shutout in as many games.

Shenandoah travels to NC Wesleyan this Saturday for another USA South match.
