Women's Soccer Ties Captains

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Shenandoah University completed its weekend USA South Conference women's soccer road trip in exactly the same way it started it - with a double overtime tie.

On Sunday, Shenandoah (9-6-4, 4-1-3 USA South) virtually assured itself of a home game at the upcoming USA South Conference Tournament by tying previous league leader Christopher Newport 0-0.

Sunday's contest comes on the heels of a 1-1 tie Saturday afternoon at N.C. Wesleyan.

With only a Friday night home game against last-place Mary Baldwin, SU trails Methodist and Greensboro for third place in the league by two points. (Teams receive three points for each league win and one point for a tie.)

MU and GC face-off against one each other Friday night and the winner of that game will have 19 points to clinch the third seed.

A Shenandoah win over the Fighting Squirrels gives the Hornets the No. 4 seed with 17 points.

In the event of a tie between GC and MU, both teams will have 17 points. SU holds the tie-breaker over both Methodist and Greensboro in that scenario because the Hornets defeated MU during the regular season and they have a better result against a higher-rated team (CNU) than Greensboro.

In any case, Shenandoah knows its first round game will be at home on Tuesday, November 3 against either Methodist or Greensboro.

Today's tie means that CNU (8-7-3, 6-0-2) will most likely be the No. 2 seed. Meredith College can clinch the regular season title with a win over local rival Peace Friday night.

Sophomore Kat Terza made 10 saves Sunday afternoon in her first game back after suffering an injury one week ago to help SU to the draw. Christopher Newport outshot the Hornets 23-7 and took eight of the game's nine corners, but the two teams each had only one shot on goal in the 20-minute extra session.
