LYNCHBURG, Va. - Host Randolph College kept Shenandoah
University winless on its 2009-10 men's basketball season with a
65-58 non-league victory Saturday afternoon.
The WildCats (4-0) shot 47 percent to the Hornets' 39 percent in
the first half to take a lead it would not relinquish against SU
(0-3).
RC led by five, 33-28, at the break as Shenandoah compounded its
shooting woes by turning the ball over 11 times and making just two
of eight attempts from behind the three-point arc.
The second half didn't bring any relief - Randolph expanded its
lead to 12 points by the 14:48 mark and the Hornets never got
closer than five points the rest of the way.
Trailing by 13, 58-45, with just over two minutes remaining,
Shenandoah went to a full court press in an attempt to get back in
it. The press produced the next four points of the game, but RC got
a Caleb Pearson layup at the 1:31 mark and SU never seriously
threatened again.
Senior Chris
Schrader paced the visitors with a co-game-high 17 points while
Kevin Kline
added six points and five boards despite playing most of the game
in foul trouble. Lenzie Adams had
14 points off the bench.
Jason Rutschman led three 'Cats in double figures with 17
points.
RC shot 39 percent (23 for 39) for the game; Shenandoah grabbed
42 of the 78 game's rebounds.
The Hornets are on the road Tuesday night at Marymount. The
non-league tilt tips-off at 7 p.m.
