Thunder Holds On Against Men

WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Trine (Ind.) held on for a 70-68 non-conference men's basketball victory over Shenandoah Tuesday night.

The Thunder (6-4) led by as many as 17 points in the second half before Shenandoah (3-8) made its run.

Trailing 59-43 with 12:03 remaining, SU scored 25 of the game's next 35 points in a span of 11:28 to bring itself to within one point with 24 seconds left.

The Hornets had cut the deficit to one earlier in the run (at the 3:20 mark) but Trine reeled off a 6-0 spurt in just 66 seconds to seemingly clinch the game by taking a 69-62 lead with 1:12 showing on the clock.

Shenandoah called timeout following the Ian Jackson 3-pointer that gave the Thunder that seven-point lead, and gave itself a chance to win it by scoring three straight layups and forcing two TU turnovers in the next 32 seconds.

After Glenn Alfieri scored the final point of the game for Trine by hitting 1 of 2 from the line with 20 seconds left, SU advanced the ball into its frontcourt before calling timeout with 16 seconds remaining.

The Hornets had three looks at the basket in those final 16 seconds, including two layups, but were unable to find the game-tying points.

The contest ended with SU committing a foul with .4 remaining and the Thunder's Scott Rogers purposely missing the ensuing free throw.

Junior Wes Weir led the victors with 22 points, including six 3-pointers wghile Alfieri and Jackson had 13 each.

Kevin Kline had a game-high 25 for Shenandoah and freshman Mo Safren added a season-high 11. Safren helped the Hornets rally from that 17-point second half deficit with three 3-pointers on four attempts.

SU is back in action Wednesday night at 7 in a non-league contest against Lycoming.
