FERRUM, Va. - Host Ferrum College snapped Shenandoah
University's six-match winning streak to start the 2009 season with
3-1 victory Friday night over the Hornets in the USA South opener
for both schools.
The Panthers (6-5, 1-0 USA South) were 25-13 winners in the
opening set, outlasted SU 27-25 in the second
and clinched it with a 25-20 victory in the fourth.
Shenandoah (6-1, 0-1) was a 25-22 victor in the third set.
The match was very close, as the two teams combined 27 ties and
15 lead changes in the four sets. Over half of these, 19, came
in the second set as FC took control of the match
with that 27-25 win.
Sophomore Rachel Maki led SU
with nine kills while freshman Mary
Harshman added eight. Amber DeHaven
and Megan Gillespie
combined to pace the defensive effort with a co-match-high 17 digs
each.
Harshman's classmate, Kelcy Brown, had all
27 of the Hornets assists.
Shenandoah continues USA South play on Saturday with a tri-match
at Methodist. The Hornets face Averett in addition to the host
Monarchs.
