FERRUM, Va. - Host Ferrum College snapped Shenandoah University's six-match winning streak to start the 2009 season with 3-1 victory Friday night over the Hornets in the USA South opener for both schools.

The Panthers (6-5, 1-0 USA South) were 25-13 winners in the opening set, outlasted SU 27-25 in the second and clinched it with a 25-20 victory in the fourth.

Shenandoah (6-1, 0-1) was a 25-22 victor in the third set.

The match was very close, as the two teams combined 27 ties and 15 lead changes in the four sets. Over half of these, 19, came in the second set as FC took control of the match with that 27-25 win.

Sophomore Rachel Maki led SU with nine kills while freshman Mary Harshman added eight. Amber DeHaven and Megan Gillespie combined to pace the defensive effort with a co-match-high 17 digs each.

Harshman's classmate, Kelcy Brown, had all 27 of the Hornets assists.

Shenandoah continues USA South play on Saturday with a tri-match at Methodist. The Hornets face Averett in addition to the host Monarchs.
