RALEIGH, N.C. - Shenandoah University achieved a historic
victory Saturday afternoon in gaining a split of its USA South
Conference volleyball tri-match with Greensboro and host Meredith
College.
After the host Avenging Angels (6-11, 2-5 USA
South) swept SU 3-0 (25-8, 25-23, 25-12) in the opener,
the Hornets came back to down Greensboro in a five-set thriller.
The win for Shenandoah (7-5, 1-5) both snaps a five-match losing
streak and is the first victory for the Hornets over Greensboro
(3-13, 2-5) since SU joined the league for the 1993-94 season.
GC had won 32-straight Dixie/USA South matches over Shenandoah
prior to the Hornets 25-21, 16-25, 25-19, 9-25, 17-15 win Saturday
afternoon at Meredith's Weatherspoon Gymnasium.
Sophomore Rachel Maki, who
had nine kills in the opening match against MC, led
the Hornets in the win over the Pride with 14 kills. Jessi
Johnson added eight to back up Maki.
SU also had 60 digs as a team with junior Amber DeHaven's 15
leading the way. She was one of three women in double-digits
in that category. Chevon Parker, who
had four kills against the Avenging Angels, had 13 versus
GC while Kelcy
Brown added 12.
Brown had a combined 46 assists in the two matches.
