WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University tied a school record for
field hockey victories in a season with a come-from-behind, 5-4
overtime win over Virginia Wesleyan Sunday afternoon on Sprint
Field at Shentel Stadium.
SU (4-3) took the early lead on a Tricia
Swider penalty stroke goal in the 2nd minute, but could
only watch as VWC (2-6) pumped in four goals in a 13-minute span
beginning at 15:13.
Tara White had the first of these four tallies with Whitney King
contributing a goal and two assists during the run.
But Shenandoah wasn't finished.
Sophomore Megan
Garrett got things started in the right direction with her
unassisted goal at 52:27 before scoring again, this time off of a
Sarah
DeLuca assist, at 55:15.
Now trailing by just one, 4-3, all of momentum was on the
Hornets side.
After getting numerous scoring chances and literally down to its
final seconds, junior Paola
Aguilar evened the game at 4-4 by scoring an unassisted
goal with just 10.7 seconds remaining on the clock.
Nearly eight minutes into the first OT, Aguilar brought the
home crowd to its feet by scoring another unassisted goal to give
SU the comeback victory.
For Aguilar, it was the second time in three games that she has
scored a game-winning goal in overtime. For the team, the win is
the fourth of the season, tying the 2004 team for most in school
history, and the five goals scored is the highest single-game total
in the seven-year history of the program.
Shenandoah keeper Danielle
Lawson made four saves, all in the first half, to earn the
win.
The Hornets travel to the College of Notre Dame (Md.) on
Thursday for a non-league contest.
