WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University extended its women's
soccer unbeaten streak to four games Sunday afternoon with a 2-2
tie versus USA South opponent Greensboro College.
After Greensboro (3-4-1, 1-0-1 USA South) scored twice within
two minutes early in the second half, Shenandoah (4-4-2, 1-0-1)
rallied with two goals of its own to salvage the tie.
Only one shot was taken in the 20 minutes of sudden-victory
overtime (by GC), but both teams had opportunities to score that
were thwarted before a shot could be taken.
Melissa Gallaher scored the opening goal at 55:31 for the Pride
when took advantage of a loose ball following a Greensboro direct
kick 30 yards from goal. The initial shot went off the Hornets
wall, and after SU failed to clear the ball, Gallaher gained
possession and was able to tuck her shot past Shenandoah keeper Kat Terza.
Less than two minutes later, another failed clear in the back
led to an unassisted tally by Melissa Torzewski. Torzewski found
herself past all of the Hornets defenders and was able to beat the
diving Terza with a low shot.
However, the contest was far from over.
Exactly five minutes after Torzewski's goal, freshman Sara Hensley took
a cross from classmate Alex Lowery at the
top of the 18-yard box and ripped her shot just under the bar to
cut the deficit in half.
In the 74th minute, a great individual effort by Amber
Womack helped the hosts tie the game. Seemingly pinned
against the touchline, Womack beat her defender to the middle of
the field and crossed the ball into the box where Hensley ran
onto it and one-touched it past GC keeper Katie Allegro.
Both teams had a couple of chances to score in the remaining 17
minutes of regulation, including one by Womack in the final minute,
but were unable to get the game-winner.
Greensboro outshot SU 13-10, but the Hornets took six of the
game's seven corners.
Terza had six saves and Allegro three. Neither woman needed to
make a save in overtime.
Shenandoah hosts Eastern Mennonite on Wednesday night at 7.
