Women Trounce Peace

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University snapped its two-game USA South Conference women's basketball losing streak Saturday afternoon with a 77-50 victory over visiting Peace College.

The Hornets (8-7, 4-5 USA South) made 12 of their first 18 shots from the field to take early command of the game over Peace (6-8, 2-6).

SU had its first double-digit lead by the 12:54 mark of the first and used a 11-0 run in a 90-second span to take a 16-point lead with 12:01 remaining.

Shenandoah was able to push this advantage out to 20 points, 33-13, by the halfway point of the first.

Senior Alexis Hargbol did most of this damage with a game-high 22 points; Hargbol made her first seven shots from the field, finished 8 for 11 from the field and 6 for 6 from the line while also pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds.

Peace briefly got itself back in it with an 8-1 run that made it 38-29 SU with 1:34 left, but Shenandoah scored the final five points of the half to give itself a 43-29 lead at the break.

The hosts continued this run to start the second, scoring the first 16 points of the half, and did not let its lead dip below 24 points for the remainder of the contest.

Coach Michelle Guyant-Holloway began to substitute liberally at this point and got all 13 of her team members at least five minutes of playing time. No Shenandoah player played more than 28 minutes in the contest and none of the Hornets starters played more than 13 minutes after the break.

In addition to Hargbol's 22, sophomore Mandy Johnston added 16 and Stephanie Holton 14. Johnston made her first four shots from the field, all from behind the arc.

SU held a 52-35 advantage on the glass, including 35-14 on the Pacers offensive end.

Karissa Herring had 10 points for PC.

Shenandoah is back in action Sunday afternoon at 2 against Meredith College. All gate receipts from this game will be donated to Haitian earthquake relief.
