Women Win on Golden Goal

WINCHESTER, Va.  – Shenandoah University earned its fourth straight women's soccer victory Tuesday night with a 2-1 non-league win over Catholic University.

Shenandoah (7-4-3) earned the victory in sudden- victory overtime with an Amber Womack penalty kick goal.

Awarded the PK because of a Catholic (6-5) handball, Womack stepped to the spot and drilled her shot just inside the left post for the game-winning goal.

The shot was just the second that the Hornets had in the final 55 minutes of the evenly played contest.

Senior Lauren Morris had the hosts opening goal by scoring off of a rebound.

Taking a direct kick from 25 yards out, Sarah Hensley struck a ball that knocked off the crossbar. That ball rebounded to Morris, who re-directed it in for the initial tally of the contest.

Five minutes later, CUA brought the game back to level when Lauren Cadott crossed the ball to Courtney Orgill at the top of the 18, where Orgill turned and pushed the shot past Hornets keeper Kat Terza.

The goal was one of three excellent scoring opportunities the Cardinals had in the opening 45 minutes; Terza was her usual outstanding self in the goal with a pair of diving saves.

Following the Orgill goal, Catholic had seven of the remaining eight shots on goal, but Womack had the one that counted with just under three minutes to play in the first overtime.

Terza finished her night with eight saves.

The Hornets return to USA South action this weekend with games at Ferrum on Saturday at 4 and Averett Sunday at 1. Please make note of this new Sunday game time.
