Hockey Tops Vixens

WINCHESTER, Va.  – Shenandoah University matched a program-record for field hockey wins with a 3-0 non-conference victory over Sweet Briar Wednesday afternoon.

With three second half goals over the Vixens, Shenandoah (7-5) matches the program-record of seven wins set last season.

The win over SBC gives the Hornets a 4-2 record this fall against ODAC opponents. In addition to the win over Sweet Briar (2-10), Shenandoah defeated future conference foes Roanoke, Bridgewater and Virginia Wesleyan.

Junior Megan Garrett tallied what proved to be the game-winner in the 41st minute off an assist from senior Kaitlin Sommer before the hosts added goals in the 47th and 55th minutes.

Sarah DeLuca tallied on a flurry in front for the second score and Paola Aguilar finished matters off with her ninth goal of the year at 54:09.

Sommer had an assist on Aguilar's tally.

Shenandoah outshot the Vixens 20-7 while SBC had a 9-8 advantage in penalty corners.

Junior Danielle Lawson did not have to make a save to post the shutout.

SU is back in action on Saturday at 2:00 in a Commonwealth Conference game against Alvernia.

The team will also be selling pink ribbons as part of a breast cancer awareness fund-raiser.
