WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Alvernia University kept Shenandoah
University winless in MAC Commonwealth field hockey play with a 4-1
win Saturday afternoon on Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium.
Samantha Landis scored the game-winner for the Crusaders (8-7,
2-2 CC) in the 56th minute to push AU past the Hornets (7-6,
0-4).
Maria Payne had tied the game at 1-1 for SU with her unassisted
goal just 1:57 into the second half.
Payne tallied on with a rebound goal following a flurry in front
of the Alvernia net.
Unfortunately for the host fans, the Crusaders relentless
offensive pressure proved too much to overcome.
Alvernia held a 15-5 advantage in shots and had a 24 of the
game's 25 penalty corners, including all 16 in the second half.
Following the Landis tally, Tonya Rutt and Ashley Tatangelo
scored in the 62nd and 64th minutes to provide the final margin of
victory.
Hornets goalkeeper Sarah Clare had eight saves.
SU hosts Frostburg State on Monday night.
