WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University completed the
non-conference portion of its field hockey schedule with a 4-3
victory over Frostburg State Monday afternoon.
Shenandoah (8-6) did not trail throughout the contest against
the Bobcats (3-15), but needed a late goal to put FSU away.
Senior Kaitlin Sommer had that unassisted tally, slipping her
shot between FSU keeper Maggie Edwards after a flurry in front of
the net.
Senior Paola Aguilar gave the hosts the early lead with her
unassisted goal at 6:43 only to see the Bobcats tie it in the
21st minute.
SU appeared to take total control by getting goals from Megan
Garrett and Aguilar in the 35th and 46th
minutes, respectively, but Frostburg had another rally in
itself.
A pair of goals in a span of 2:58 tied it for FSU with just over
10 minutes remaining, setting Sommer up for the game-winning
shot.
FSU outshot the Hornets 22-16 and held a 20-8 advantage in
penalty corners. The Bobcats had two of these corners after time
expired and was able to get off one shot that went just wide.
SU keeper Sarah Clare made eight saves.
Shenandoah, which sets a new school record for wins in a season
with the victory, travels to Elizabethtown on Wednesday for a
Commonwealth Conference contest.
