WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 4/10 Christopher Newport University
rebounded from a loss and a tie last week to down Shenandoah
University 3-0 in USA South Conference men's soccer action
Wednesday evening on Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium.
CNU (14-1-1, 4-1 USA South) got all of the offense it would need
with a Brian Lybert goal in the ninth minute over Shenandoah
(4-9-2, 0-3-1).
Lybert was the recipient of a pair of perfect passes to be able
to drop the ball into an open net. Clif Kipper threaded a through
ball to Andrew Bonorden, who found himself with a one-on-one with
SU keeper Adrian
Acosta.
As Acosta came out to challenge a shot, Bonorden crossed the
ball in front of Acosta to the wide-open Lybert.
All Lybert had to do was tap a six-yard shot into the wide open
net for the opening goal of the contest.
However, Lybert wasn't finished with that opening tally.
In the 66th minute, he set up Danny Franklin before
closing the book with a second goal at the 71:27 mark.
Christopher Newport outshot Shenandoah 21-3 with all but five of
those shots coming in the first half.
Junior L.A. St.
Hill had two of the Hornets three shots, including a pair of
excellent chances in the opening 45 minutes.
Acosta had nine saves.
SU hosts Ferrum on Saturday in a 4:30 USA South contest. With
the two teams currently tied for sixth in the league, the winner of
Saturday's game will clinch a spot in the post-season USA South
Tournament.
