Spikers Sweep Squirrels

STAUNTON, Va. - Shenandoah University completed a season sweep of its USA South volleyball series with Mary Baldwin by sweeping the Fighting Squirrels 3-0 Wednesday night.

Shenandoah (15-10, 5-9 USA South) surpasses last season's win total with the 25-14, 25-19, 25-20 victory over the Squirrels (1-25, 1-12).

SU now has the same number of conference wins as the previous three years combined.

The Hornets trailed for just four service rotations Wednesday evening and led throughout the opening two sets. After falling behind 10-6 in the third, a 7-1 Shenandoah run gave the visitors a lead it would not relinquish.

Rachel Maki, who had 10 kills, finished off the match by knocking home a Kelcy Brown assist.

Sophomore Mary Harshman led all players with 11 kills and Maki had 10, while Megan Gillispie paced the defense with 14 digs.

Brooke Strathy and Brown posted 14 and 10 assists, respectively.

SU is back in action this Sunday with a tri-match at Methodist. In addition to the 1 p.m. match against the host Monarchs, Shenandoah will take on Averett at 3.
