WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University completed its 2010 volleyball regular season by dropping a 3-2 USA South heartbreaker to Greensboro College.
Greensboro (26-8, 15-3 USA South) clinches the No. 2 seed at the upcoming USA South Conference Tournament with the 25-21, 25-27, 27-25, 23-25, 15-13 victory over the Hornets (17-13, 6-12).
Shenandoah will be the No. 8 seed and will face ninth-seeded Ferrum at 5:00 Tuesday evening at Christopher Newport.
The winner of the SU/FC match will take on No. 6 in the nation CNU immediately following the play-in contest.
Shenandoah swept Ferrum this year, winning in three both times.
SU gave the Pride its best effort Saturday afternoon but fell victim to their "big three" of Sha McDuffie, Karen Riffancht and Brittany Hunsucker.
The three combined for 60 kills of the team's 72 kills with Hunsucker's 22 kills leading all players.
Junior Rachel Maki countered with 16 kills for the Hornets with Haley Smith adding 14 and Mary Harshman 12.
In the decisive fifth, Shenandoah took a 4-1 lead but could only watch as GC seized control by running off a 6-1 run.
After taking a 6-5 lead following a Riffanacht kill, the Pride trailed for just one serve rotation the rest of the way.
SU was able to take a 13-12 lead thanks to a Maki kill, but GC answers on the next serve to start a 3-0 run that clinched the match.
